SONDER

I’ll never stop missing you, you know.
Even though I can walk past your old bedroom without pausing.
Imagining myself inside in happy times, singing lullabies and such.

I stopped making too much dinner long ago.
And I don’t mind who sits in your chair at the table, any more.
I don’t check the clock or watch the door. But I always miss you.

Life goes on pleasantly. I’m happy knowing you are.
Experiences I’m no longer a part of, exactly as it should be.
Reason for you to come visit, to catch me up.

You come when you want and I want it that way.
A welcome surprise or treat in my world, a need fulfilled in yours.
When you go again, I don’t cry any more.

I remember grandma when we would all pile in,
The highlight of her month. We’d spare an hour, thinking ourselves fine.
(She’d have been thrilled even with a minute).

A dad who never forgot to say
He loved me “All the world”. Miss You messages began there.
And one day he was old. Heartbeats and breath overdue.

Then, I learned to leave nothing left unsaid.
Those words reside in dreamy whispers now and moonlit evenings.
The softness in your heart was put there by me.

And while I’m here, even though you’re grown,
My knee will always be strong enough to hold you upon,
My arms wide enough to hold you all within.

And, if I shouldn’t get that far along the road of life
You’ll know, because I told you, I love you all the world.
And I’ll never stop missing you, you know.
