Life Is Learning

And learning is a part of life.

When Winter broke open a MEL science kit today with her sister, we didn’t call it a science lesson. She knows what she was doing was scientific but she was more interested in the hydrophobic sand and finding out why it does what it does.

She understands that working with numbers is good practice for adulthood and so we use a maths book regularly. But Winter doesn’t always use the same one. We chop and change if she grows to dislike one.

This morning as I read aloud The Secret Seven, Winter wanted to model with clay and made a jewellery dish and a little cat. Later when I thought “it’s a bit quiet” and went searching this afternoon I found Winter watching Minecraft whilst paper quilling. She was engrossed in her hobby for over an hour. I had no need to say she were doing D&T.

When I read about Pope Alexander VI, Pope Leo X and Martin Luther to her sister, I didn’t realise Winter was listening but she commented on them as I put the book away. We didn’t call it a history lesson but she knew these people were from history.

She read for pleasure. We didn’t write a book report.
She went to sports club. We didn’t call it PE.
She made her own supper. Nope. It wasn’t Food Tech.

All in a day. And we didn’t tick a box or time anything. Learning here is calm and beautiful. And it is a part of life.

  1. ♥️ Thank you for this. Your blog is an inspiration to me, giving me glimpses of the intriguing possibilities in unschooling–as well as your observations of the calmness and beauty that surround all of us and all too often go unnoticed.
