There are times during your home educating journey as a parent, when you wonder if what you’re doing, is what others do. Not that it troubles you in your sleep but you do wonder. Whether you’re new to everything or your child has reached a new phase in their life, as they grow and change you find you’re interested in what others are doing.

The problem arises when we ask “Whats typical?” You’ll get a rush of well meaning home ed’ veterans telling you that there is no “typical”. Follow your childs lead, they will say. Watch them play, don’t compare yourself to others or the classic “Every family does it differently!” It’s not very reassuring is it? And it doesn’t answer what you were really asking which is “How.”

“How are you doing this right now.”

“Examples PLEASE!”

“I’m worried were not doing enough right now. How can I be sure?”

“I can’t get my child to sit down and learn. How do you do it?”

It is very, very typical for younger children to want you to participate in everything they’re doing or be unable to work alone or not be reading or to want to play computer, jump trampoline, stand on their head while drawing or eating and roll around on the floor moaning if you suggest comprehension exercises.
