Tend To

Recently, I took myself off on a long writing weekend .

It was lovely to be able to think peacefully without any interruptions or responsibilities. I got to eat one of my sourdough loaves to myself and drink as much hot tea as I could! That, along with walking the wild shoreline and people watching in cosy cafes set me up well for getting lots of writing done.

Restored, I ventured home to those I missed the most because they need tending too! I find that whilst everything runs smooth when I’m not there, everyone, big and small, are eager to want to spend a little extra time with me when I return.

Of course they want to share what they’ve been up to, but mostly they want to talk to me about how they’re feeling and what if anything has pleased or upset them.

That is what they need me for right now in this season. They can cope fine if I’m not around for a short time, but they need to know when I’m coming home again. They need to know where I will be should they need me. They need to know that I’m there to listen, to offer comfort, and to remind them that they’re seen and valued.

Sometimes, what we tend to isn’t just the day-to-day running of a household or the work that piles up, but the hearts of the people we love. In the midst of all the doing, it’s the being present that often matters most.
